Local events around Indy

As a recent transplant to the Indianapolis area, I was able to plan a few activities for the upcoming holiday break while researching this blog and learning more about the many events taking place. The Fourth of July falls during the middle of the week this year, but there are plenty events taking place all week and into the weekend to keep you busy.

There are many firework displays in the area, but here are a few you should consider checking out on the Fourth:
– Victory Field after the Indianapolis Indians game at dusk
Speedrome Fireworks at 10 p.m.
– Regions Bank Freedom Blast in Downtown Indianapolis at 9:45 p.m.

All of this talk about fireworks makes me want to listen to Katy Perry’s song “Firework,” but if fireworks aren’t what you had in mind, check out some of these other events:

Tuesday, July 3:
The National Art Museum of Sport is featuring a ‘Speed and Motion: Racing to the Finish Line’ exhibit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The CarmelFest starts at noon until 10:30 p.m. and continues on Wednesday with live music, food and fireworks. The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will perform patriotic tunes at the Jazz Kitchen from 7 to 10 p.m. If a magic show is more your style, the Indy Magic Monthly will show its 51st show at 7:30 p.m at Theatre on the Square.

Wednesday, July 4:
Get up early and join in on the fun with the Firecrack 6 mile run/walk at 8 a.m. in Downtown Indianapolis. During the day, an old-fashioned ice cream social with a Victorian Circus will take place at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Indiana Historical Society is sponsoring the Concerts on the Canal series which features the Indianapolis Municipal Band playing patriotic tunes from 5 to 9:30 p.m. The Rathskeller Restaurant is celebrating the Fourth of July with a silent film at 7 and a performance by Zanna Doo from 8 to 11 p.m.
